Geeks Like Me Archives - That Little Redheaded Girl's Internet Den of Delights! https://www.thatlittleredheadedgirl.com/tag/geeks-like-me/ Welcome one and all to my Internet den of delights! Like the loudspeaker warns on the most rickety and exhilarating of those old wooden rollercoasters, fasten your seat belts folks, you are in for a breathtaking ride. I am overflowing with girlish enthusiasm (as I am prone to do) to share my wacky world with you and my fiendish love for politics, design, architecture, pop culture, Frappucinos and all things retro. I devour them all with the same unbridled enthusiasm as my favorite dessert, cupcakes. I have long been a huge, screaming mad fan of comedienne Margaret Cho. Whether you agree with her or not and I often do, you’ve got to give her an A plus for having the moxie not to pander to the middle and for telling the twisted story of womanhood just as it is: cellulite, discrimination, bad fellatio and all.

I gadded off gleefully last week to her inaugural book reading and was not dissapointed. It was refreshing to see her in street clothes, face dabbed in something other than that dastdardly pancakey stage make-up every Sunset Boulevarder must apply (and re-apply) when performing beneath the stage lights. For me, Margaret’s words have the potency of battery acid tinged with the incisive aha’s often contained in your grandma’s wise counsel. Her tome, I Have Chosen to Stay and Fight is no exception. A sampling:

“Feminism is non-negotiable. If you are not a feminist, you do not deserve to live” (p. 91)
“A government that would deny a gay man the right to a bridal registry is a fascist state” (p. 145)
“Strange, there is so much religion in the world, but only enough to make us fight over who is right, not enough to make us love each other.” (p. 179)
“Our revolution is long overdue.” (p. 233)

You may want to throw I Have Chosen to Stay and Fight across the room, tear out every page or conversely hug it tight to your chest and buy it a fancy dinner and desert on the way to the hotel. Either way, it will make you think…and scratch your head…and get off your fanny and do something, anything to make our three-ring circus of a world a better place. All hail Margaret! If you ever need an opening act, call me. I’d be honored to warm up the crowd. Heck, I’d be honored just to polish your barrettes and your Mommy’s Folger coffee can.

Well here’s a chance to live out your fantasy on the big screen in the land of Entourage. I got word last week of a grassroots fan site taking requests for those who think themselves worthy to walk the Lynda Carter mile. (fabulous toned ass, coned patriotic corset and bronze wrist cuffs required)

If you’ve ever fancied yourself flying through the air with the greatest of ease go to: http://ultimatewonder.com/main.html. If you don’t get the lead, you can always plead for the role of Cheetah or Mr. Psycho. 😈

I now know the contact high Olympian athletes experience after donning their shiny patria-gear and rubbing shoulders with their compatriots ’round the globe in the ceremonial opening parade. I’ve seen a practical pou-pou’s platter full of health ministry folks here on my Tromso sojourn, which includes not only members of the G-20 but representatives of most former Eastern Bloc fiefdoms that once possessed such gold-winning, young gymnasts. It is tres encouraging to know that democracy and innovation are flourishing in these countries once relegated to the communist dustbin, like Poland and Hungary. Maybe it’s true what Travel and Leisure says about Krakow: that it’s the new Prague and one of the hippest stop-offs on the planet. Who ever thought we’d see a Czech Minister of Information that had no secret police connections, in our lifetime? Instead of being an old and jowly shadowpuppet senior with a wide-brimmed hat, she was instead young, bon vivant and remarkably well-coiffed from head to toe.

My most profound takeaway from the Trans-Euro e-Health Summit is that “global community” is not just hip jargon used to sell Coca Cola Light to our neighbors in Kuala Lumpur. The concept of a borderless world, knitted together tighter than a Norwegian ski cap is real and it’s now. This is evidenced by the fact that I was phalanxed by no less than four countries at all times during my many meeting sessions. HIT peeps from Sweden, Bulgaria, Belgium, Switzerland, Scotland and Greece were my most frequent seatmates. They taught me quite a bit and I’m not talking about eHR installation and the promise of patient data mobility. I got the opportunity most Americans do not: to leave our mirror, mirror on the wall, we’re the greatest of them all culture and journey to a universe where being from the Land of Uncle Sam causes no great excitement and in fact, can even be a liability. Talk about working a tough room!

Warning: These colors don’t bleed but they just may scrape on contact. A number of people grabbed a peek at my nametag and wondered aloud with great perplexity why someone from the US was even at the event. At least I had a cohort in conference ribbing seeing as the event host (one Norway) is not as of yet an EU member, having given a thumbs-down in both the 70’s and 90’s. Ahem. All of this grushting is not to say I wasn’t greeted warmly by many delegates after turning on my 400-watt charm (uber props to my new Swede St. Olav friends in the rural North and the fantastic Karl Jurgen Schmidt from Deutcheland! Wouldn’t dream of walking the Artic Cathedral towbridge path and discussing cross-border telemedicine with anyone else. For him, I will be sure to learn how to say You Rock! in German:redhead:)

Despite a few bumps for me on the formerly unchartered road of global diplomacy, this conference was a valuable indoctrination into a new work and personal climate. I learned that there is a whole world outside my Beltway window and that the Financial Times, not just the New York Times, should be read every day for proper world perspective, Bertoscolini-watch and the updated scorecard for ratification of the EU constitution . Drats! And here I thought the Economist and the Scotsman made me continental enough. Looks as if I’ll have to add a 596th newspaper to my morning must-review Internet feeds.

Thanks to my new compatriots for enlightening my world view and for not discarding me straightaway because of my Made in the USA label. Should you ever find yourself in America, I’ll be sure to take you to Steak and Shake and out to our biggest stadium movieplex. Popcorn’s on me! Until then, I’ll see you next year in sunny, sandy Seville.

Humbly in Your Debt, (And ever grateful you introduced me to Italian frocks, Scandinavian cloudberries, Belgian chocolates and Artic moosefur)

After last year’s Presidential elections I haven’t seen so many baby doll tees and bumper stickers urging the populace to vote. But today, I’m asking you to exercise your civic right by going to http://www. Podcastalley.com, searching for my new hour-long show Radio Redhead and giving it a listen. If you like what you hear, vote for the show in the weekly Podcast Alley rankings. Come on, does Yeast Radio really deserve to be in the top 10? I’ll be frank. I’ve never won anything in my entire life: not a door prize, bingo game, bowling trophy or beauty queen title. I would love it if we could schooch up in the rankings from our current 477. (sniff, sniff)

I guarantee you’ll chuckly heartily at this new live chat winding down a circuitious path. You thoughts, feedback and votes are appreciated. :cheer:

Video may have killed the radio star, but podcasting will rip their corpses up from the graveyard and back onto the airways. Radio has always been a part of my life. Both of my parents participated in AM/FM talkies, my pops as an announcer and my mum as a programmer for the venerable WHBC in ol’ Canton, Ohio. Rumor has it, my birth was announced during dad’s 11 o’clock news segment. And, a good portion of my childhood week-ends were spent wandering the dimly lit hallways and recording booths of ‘HBC, getting to know the local B-List talent and developing a little more than a girly crush on one Paul Harvey…sigh…

So imagine the pure melodic delight I experienced when I found my very own radio star in waiting, the one and only Mr. Q. His voice is like pure baritone honey that warmly drips down the back of your throat when mixed with tea on a cold, cold day. Vocal cord nirvana, I know, right?!? I may be the only gal who prefers recordings of her man butchering the English language (par-ti-cu-lar-ly) to a pocketful of posies. :kiss1: Anyhow, I digress. Mr. Q for his part has a Superman size hankering for the heyday of radio lingering in his past as well, having listened to – I’m sure – every one of Art Bell’s late night shows at least enough times to know what Egyptology can teach us about the melting glaciers in Antarctica and how that relates to modern alien spacecraft.

And so Mr. Q and I take our mutual mavenosity and do what any couple over 30 with wits to burn, no Westie and too much time on their hands because they don’t have a yard to mow do…we parlay it into a hobby. I give you “The Trix and Josh Show” brought to you via Podcasting, the ham radio of the new millenium. Don’t ask me to explain all the techie ins and outs of this process. All I know is that it involves alot of cables, virtual and real and a whole lot of big packages. The important part is that it results in hilarious on-air segments that we will be bringing to you periodically through the TLRG website. Podcasting is a forum whose time has come. Where else can you hear about the origins of the Guberburger, dream interpretations of attacking Dobermans and the consequence of exploding carrot curry soup all in one tidy 40-minute segment? Be sure to tune into our inaugural effort and remember, as Marconi and Venus Williams did, we’ll improve with practice. :cheer: Turn us on today!

Today I sit mob-blogging live from the Gnomedex 4.0 confab in beauteous Reno, Nevada. There are very few times in life when you walk into a room and find true compatriots. This is even more the case when you are a wacky girl who reads the Economist, Ruski-history and 400-page tomes of German science and Planckian theory for kicks. Let’s just say other than being attached to a few euchre-playing clicks in my younger years, I spent my youth on the outside of hip looking in.

Not so at Gnomedex where people warm their collective hands in the fire of RSS Feeds, podcasting and the future of on-line chat. Like Jerry MacGuire who won his girl over at Hello, Gnomies won me over with the gifting of a free Google glo cup upon entry to the conference cocktail par-tay. These Mos are mellow-yellow sharing friendly, whip-smart and so full of tech-verve they can fix your corrupted internal drive in the flick of wrist. The environ is literally bubbling over with futurist learnings. Where else can you meet the inventor of the floppy disk and see a man gyrate to disco as women write on his chest all in the same 24/7?

I confess to not knowing flickr from feeddemon but here is what I have learned thus far from my new crowd.

  • The techie is a breed unto himself. Flaunting the road rules of fashion and the generally accepted laws of digestion, he is likey to be spotted in cargo shorts and flip-flops, bravely ordering a QUAD cappucino at the ‘Bucks
  • Multi-media blogging where you can hear about, see and hear your aunt’s new dog bark and play is the wave of the future
  • Tech strategies working in on-line porn sites portends a successful trend
  • Geeks may go wild but they don’t do the Hussle:cry:
  • Conferences are mucho fun with ubiqitous wi-fi access, round tables and a group on-line chat
  • Hackers don more leather than can be found in the Coach factory..gasp!!!
  • As I depart excitedly to compete for free gifts including the much coveted baby doll tee and sound cards I fail to comprehend how to use, I leave you with my two favorite conference quotes.

“There are always aspirational products (and technologies) for people who are assholes.”
“Geeks used to be a four letter word. Now it’s a six figure income.”:pigtails:

In swag and slots I trust,
